hi everyone, i just want to say it plain and simple, don't know a lot of computers and all deep stuff but i know some things.
I just need some help.
My problem is that i have a HP Pavilion XE783 for the past 3 years and a couple months ago a bought this new one (all parts)(athlon, video card, etc,etc.), i bought everything but the hard drive and the cd burner so i took it from the old one 'till the other parts arrive, now i have all the parts hooked up in the new one and everything works fine, no problems at all, "but" (there's allways a but) now that i want to put the old one back together don't ask me why but it not doing enything!!!, makes me so mad 'couse a have everything in place al cables and stuff (i guess).
what exactly does (1) when i turn it on the light of the hard drive works but it goes out in like 10, 15 sec, (2) In the screen appears a blue backgruond and white letters HP invent and that's it, i can't do absolutely nothing, my brother in law said that is the BIOS but i have no idea what to do and he's a very busy man but i like to fix it so i can take to the church that i promise them that i was gonna donate it. ANY HELP PLEASE!!!
one more thing don't ask me what i did (i think i changed one of the "jumpers") but when i turned it on one time i pressed F1 and it was saying entering SETUP... (wait and wait and nothing)

Well, changing one of the jumpers, as you say you "think you did" is probably the key here. Considering you're getting a signal on the monitor and it's starting to boot up tells me that most likely you have every connected properly.

But jumpers can be very important. You can't just move one and still expect the machine to operate, at all. You need to either figiure out which jumper it was that you changed, or see if you can find a manual for that motherboard and check all the jumpers to see if they are set properly.

Sorry but that's the best advice I have at the moment. Maybe someone else will have some more encouraging words.

Try Cable Select jumper setting. You probable didn't touch the jumper on the CD-ROM so it should be fine. Place the HDD on the end of the IDE cable. Position zero. (0) CD-ROM on position 1 on the IDE.

Give that a try.

When you put your old hard drive with the new parts did you format the hard drive. Formating a hard drive from HP or any other computer manufacturer found in best buy will make the system non functional. From past experiences, I have come to the conclusion that these companies put something in the hard drive that the system checks for. If this is not found then the sytem doesnt boot up.

You might try to set the 1st boot device to CDrom in the setup screen, and use the restore cd that came with the HP if you still have it. In fact, it might find the OS by itself if you pop the restore cd from Hp in the cd and try to boot it up.

That should allow you to reformat the hard drive, and "restore" the windows back to day one by reinstalling it.

Hey Lucas. I spent three hours at my brothers house yesterday trying to fix the same problem on his Pav XL 876. You and he are not alone because I've seen this thread or similar before. Question: is your mouse and keyboard connected via USB? My brothers is. And what works is to have a standard ps/2 keyboard plugged in at the same time. What's even crazier is that it should be plugged into the mouse port!! It is the only way to get past the "blue screen". I have tried everything. Including a system restore(which took some time to get right). To do a system restore,at some point it asks you to put disk 2 into the machine,you can put it in but it doesn't do anything when you press Enter. Or Spacebar,or Alt,F1,F this or that! It recognized the disk only after i unplugged the ps/2 keyboard and plugged it back into th mouse port. And anyone who thinks the keyboard and mouse ports are marked wrong, they're not. Yes it's an old Packard Bell PS/2 keyboard that now keeps his 1.2 gig Pavilion running. No one has a logical explanation for this. I've searched for months.
