For the Athlon XP, there's really no beating any of the nForce2 motherboards currently on the market. Performance-wise, all of them line up in the same ranges with only minor differences. You're going to want to base your purchase more on the features the individual boards have. A couple of good brands are Asus, Abit, Epox, MSI, and Gigabyte. There's other nForce2 motherboards from different brands, but those are the ones I can think of right now.
If you want the uber-fastest of the fastest, you're going to want to make sure the board of your choice has the nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset, and all of the above brands have their own versions of boards based on that chipset. If I were going to pick out a new board right now, and wanted all kinds of goodies, and didn't care about cost, I'd go with the Gigabyte 7NNXP. Newegg has them for 165 dollars, shipped. It's not the cheapest, but it has all kindsa goodies.

I have the A7N8X myself, flashed to support 400Mhz fsb, and it's pretty darn nice.
But as already said, for AMD, nothing can beat the nForce2 series as of now.

Asus makes very fine motherboards. Tuned for performance, their the fastest boards out their. My A7N8X Deluxe Rev. 2.0 works wonderfully for overclocking.

Best in what aspect??
I have (currently) an AOpen AK75 , SiS 745 chipset which is so stable it isn't even funny. It does NOT even come close to NF2 or VIA's latest & greatest benches due to my memory thruput being slower.
Do you think that bothers me much?
NO. I don't have many of the lockups and program glitches that so many of us have read or heard about.
This is the MOST stable MoBo that I have ever owned , and that includes Intel based solutions as well .
If speed and the ability to reboot from a lockup , er -- I mean !!!
You need to decide what criteria makes a MoBo the best FOR YOU.
Stability , Price , Warranty , Performance , Upgradability , Company reputation , Customer Service.....ETC.....
I like a good stable setup over speed , but WE always want more speed too. Robert

True, speed isn't worth much unless it's followed by stability. It's great being able to overclock everything in a box and never have a crash, until you try to use Steam to get Counter-Strike 1.6. |
