Networking connections PROBLEMS!!

I recently had a cable drop from a wall port in one room straight to another port in a adjacent room. It does not go through a hub, patch panel, etc... In one room, I have one computer connected to the port directly. In the other room, I have to computers connected through a 4pt hub which is then connected to the port in that room. I CANNOT, for the life of me, get the two rooms to talk to eachother. The two computers in the room can talk to one another. I have them all on the same IP network with default subnet mask. I have tried everything I can think of to get these things to talk to eachother, i.e, different cables, crossover cables, using uplink on the hub. I am not sure what else to try.

Please help!!! I am wondering if the port is bad and I need to get the guys back out here to fix it. The only thing that suggests that it is working is when plugging in different cables, you can see the link light on the hub go on and off... That leads me to believe that the port is working, but just no communication between the two rooms- getting Request timed out. Sorry if I am rambling, but it feels like I have been working on this thing for years... staring to pull hairs!

One thing to try is get a long CAT5 patch cable and bypass the ports all together. Bring it straight in to the hub from the remote pc. It should work. Then try bypassing only the port in the remote pc's room, and then the port in the other room. You should be able to narrow down the problem.

Are all the computers on the same "workgroup" name??

If its Win9x they are on "workgroup" by default.
If its WinXP they are on "mshome" by default.

They all need to be on the same workgroup.

I suppose they all have IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x range.

Can you ping the comp in the far room??

They are all in the same workgroup, running 2K Pro. You cannot ping the far computer (single computer)...

Is the network card on the "One Computer" ok? did you try to ping "localhost" to see if it responds? It's probably a stretch but worth a shot.

You can ping the local loopback... so that leads me to believe that the card is working. However, I am going to replace the card- just to see. It is weird though. I tried putting a hub in between the far computer and the wall port and if you ping from the computer lab- you can see the activity, but the request still times out. Any ideas from that info??

This could be a short or open wire in the cat5 cable, most likely where the cable connects to the port. Or it could be one or more wires are reversed in the cat5 cable . Did you put the RJ45 connectors on yourself? What could be happenning is this:

Your hub LED flicks on and off as it receives the transmitted packets. But if the wire pair that is used to transmit data back is reversed or open or shorted, you will never receive the packets. Something like this would cause what you are describing. (in coming activity but no out going activity)

Check out the link below. You will notice only two pairs (4 wires) are used out of the 4 pairs (8 wires). One pair transmits data the other receives data.

The new ports were installed by a professional cable company. I did not install anything myself. The cables are all factory made. I have tried all different cables on all points in the mini network, but still no good. I am not sure what kind of cabling the company used between the two ports... but if this is not resolved soon, I may have to call them to come check the ports- but I would like to leave that as a last resort.

Ok...now I have another added bit of info. I went and changed the far computer's ip address to an address that is the same as one of the lab computers by accident. When I went and looked at the lab computer, it showed that there was duplicate IP address on the network. So, that means that they do know about eachother- but just won't talk to eachother. This is driving me up the wall. I do have a proxy client configured on the far computer, but I disabled it and still no results. UGH!!!
