Frequent Blue Screening in 98SE

Hi, lately I've been getting frequent BSOD appearing when I'm on the computer.

I just want to know what the most likely culprit is?

Is it some sort of virus or trojan? because I've ran all kinds of AV software to try and find it , Norton, The Cleaner, Swat It, Stinger, PC-Cillin, but niether have found anything.

cept sometimes when i run them i get a BS also. its weird.

Or is it my registry? I have programs that supposedly clean and fix your registry, like Easy Cleaner, regclean, even Norton Utilities, so I am stuck.. I have no idea why Id be getting so much blue screening..

anyone have suggestions?

This could be the result of memory going bad.
If possible, substitute a known good DIMM as a test and work from there.

We need full system information.

Some motherboards, in particular the K7S5A requires a very stable power supply in regards to voltage output.

Many causes for BSOD''s ,, try to write down the data shown when it occurs..

How long have you been running your current install of 98se? It could be a hardware issue like Max suggested or it may just be time to start from scratch. When i was running 98se, i would reformat and reinstall once a year or so. It seems that there are others that might agree with this process.

Your registry might be so cluttered with junk that not even a reg cleaner can clean things up. Especially if you have been running on that install for more than a year or two, installing and unistalling programs.

I have only installed this 98SE under a year.. i'll be coming close ot a year when december january hits.. thats when i was planning on starting from scratch..

umm i have ASUS a7V133 board, running one 512 SD RAM 133 from MIcron and another 128 SD 133 from Micron as well.

hmm never thought of it being a memory problem. I'll remove the 128 and see how it holds up. I know i used to have problems when I was running the 512 with two 128's

my chip is XP 2000+
80GB Maxtor Diamond Plus
128 Geforce 3 Ti
dunno..

well, my best assumption was if it aint no virus or trojan, it was probably my system getting bogged down in the registtry section, but I wanted to be sure if wanst sum AV problem.

I'd like to hold off on the starting from scarcth until holidays cuz I got a lot of school work projects thats coming up and I just dont have time to reinstall EVERYTHING right now

Media Cooling? Software? Hardware? Cables?

Make sure the CPU temps are reasonable, and all cables are fully inserted and no bent pins, etc. What has been installed in the computer lately? consider install to mean both software and hardware.

lack of consistent formatting and reinstalling?

This usually is the suspect in any BSOD for any version of windows... my experience at least.

Thanks meese for that link. Helps me a lot in finding out what could be causing my BS...

hmm u know i forgot to mention that I am running a Promise driver. gonna get that update and see if it works. So far I have removed my 128 SD ram chip and just left it as my 512. so far so good.

gonna update that Promist Ultra driver and hopefully my problems will go away.

Thanks guys for all your help.

Hopefully I wont have to come back and post more messages on this particular thread
