Problem with Albatron NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 128Mb

Hi,

I recently installed the above video card... It was working fine for about 3 weeks,.. Now,..(after installing Roxio EX Cd creator) I have all kinds of errors,...

AGP errors while booting,....

Once Windows XP Pro finally booted (using "last known configuration that worked" from dos start menu),.. the resolution was really small (640x480) and the Video card was noted as not functioning in "Device Manager"

I un-installed the Roxio program.

I re-installed the latest driver,.. again.

Everything seems ok but I am getting errors from time to time like my desktop icons turning black.... and now the screen just blinks for a second or so from time to time....

I really have no idea what the deal is,...is it my power supply? If it is,... wouldn't this have happended from the beginning?

Can this be caused by a software install gone bad? Is it the brand new video card???

Thanks so much for any help,...

Dang you have alot of stuff in that box! Your power supply is a little on the low side. It's recommended to use PSU's of at least 300w. The GF4 cards are known to be power hogs in some systems.

The black icons are either memory heat issues on the card or corrupted drivers. you can check for heat by feeling the v/c when you get the black icons, if it is burning hot................

You should look for a nvidia driver eradicator, nasty file remover, something to that effect, get rid of all nvidia references, on reboot set up standard pci video driver, reboot, and then reinstall your nvidia driver of choice.

WOW!!! all that on 250 watts

I would have to say it'd be the power supply also, but if you decide you are going to change it for a bigger power supply DON'T put in a normal ATX power suppy, you WILL fry your motherboard, processor and probably a few other devices in your computer ( I know from personal experience with my old Dell ). Dell power supplies are wired differently than an ATX standard power supply, so you wil have to either buy a larger one from Dell or get or make an adapter for it.

Here's a link on how to make an adapter for this

So what about the blinking screen?

The screen will shut off then come back on from time to time,...not very often but it dioes happen,....

Not really sure why this is happening... is this a symptom of the power supply?

Thanks

Well, no manford that's highly unlikely. New systems have protection against this.

Yes, giger, it is the symptom of an overwhelmed PSU, not being able to dole out enough wattage to your system. Underclocking your CPU ... actually nm it's a dell ..... -.-;

Ok, well, yes, replacing it with a more powerful PSU (I'd go for a 350-380W PSU; your current one, though solid, isn't powerful enough- i'm sure it supplies near it's max stated capacity, or it wouldn't work at all, and that it supplies enough Amperes per rail, but the watt rating isn't there. I would recommend an Antec PSU (a generic PSU would not be advisable), but it's up to you.

Also, might I ask why you require a 40GB and 60GB 7.2k RPM ATA HDD's, and an 18.2GB SCSI Atlas? While I'm sure your SCSI offered phenominal performance for it's time, isn't it outperformed by your ATA drives? Even if it's a 10K RPM version, the areal density improvements on the ATA's should more than make up for it ....

Oh, and why the hell do you have a Zip drive?

And btw, it's a good solid PSU, but it's not the best ever made... besides, I myself run my Mac on an (Apple) 150W PSU...
