Ha. Haha. HAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAAA!!! Lmao.. I seriously hope that was a joke, because i cracked up and laughed for a minute when I read this. You're joking, aren't you? If not about buying the XT, at least about it being much faster, yes?
The Radeon 9800 XT ... is ... well, a marketing gimmick- and a waste of money, intended to pull the wool over the eyes of the gullible and the rich. Well, more accurately, appeal to the rich (not neccessarily
rich but those willing to spend more than they have to), and those aforementioned who don't know what they're talking about, and take everything for the face-value.
The Radeon 9800 Pro XT 256MB DDR, is, IMO, a bit of a joke.
If you would feel free to tell me why you think it's so much faster, I'm sure i'd be quite amused to read it, and so i encourage you. However, I'm afraid I must first tell you why, assuming you don't know, it's not much faster.
The R9800 Pro XT is a Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB DDR with replaced, slightly lower-latency BGA mem chips, and a more expensive cooling solution, allowing it to be clocked higher. Which also means there's little room for OC'ing yourself- as ATi has already done it for you.
Now, as a slight core increase, even a 20% one, will not get you a noticible improvement, (a 20% core increase will not gain you 20% more fps, closer to 15% at best, and human perception is not so good as to be able to tell the difference between a 10-15% increase- [think 30fps vs 33fps])- but raising the price by $200 on the card
will.
Oh, another things that make no performance difference: 256MB DDR frame buffer- makes no difference in performance in any games to date- even at 1600x1200x32 16x Aniso 4x FSAA.
And as people can often hit 416MHz on R9800 Pros with stock cooling.... well, as I'm sure you'd understand, the difference is minimal.
As for the person; what OS did you say you were using? And what drivers? Also, i sincerely doubt it could possibly be a heat issue, but just incase, if you clock the memory down, that would make the difference if it is.
