What is the average life span of a DSL filter? or How often should they be changed?

will your speed decrease over time because of a filter?

dsl filters go on every line "but" the modem line. Their purpose is mainly to keep the electronic "noise" from the dsl connection from interferring with your telephone, answering machine, fax machine etc. Since they aren't in the dsl line they shouldn't have any effect on the dsl speed.

I've noticed that occasionally my dsl appear to slow down, but it usually only lasts for a short while and then goes back to normal

thats kinda what I mean, I used to get speeds in the high 600's low 700's depending on time of day and which speed test I ran

toast.net, broardband reports, and some other one, now I get like high 400's low 500's

I'm going to put on a new filter, and see

I have my phone line and filter going into the same phone jack thur a double jack that turns into one, been that way from the beginng

I don't think a filter goes bad- it's just a simple electronic circuit. It shouldn't wear out over time just like your computer shouldn't slow down because the hardware's old (well..... that obviously happens but it's due to software )

We're not talking about mechanical filters like for your heater, water or swimming pool. I don't think the industry is old enough to say how long a filter is good for. This is the first time I've ever heard it brought up. It's like crystaldragon said, they're made to filter out the noise for the phone hookups only.

i had a bad filter as it turns out and it brought my regular browsing of 730 down to 400....200...300......verizon technician came out and tested all the lines and said that the filter was bad. so if you got a bad filter, it does effect the speed.

I suppose it would be possible under the right conditions.
The dsl filter is basically a "band-pass" filter. It is supposed to allow only the voice part of the eletrical signal and block the frequencies used by the dsl data. I suppose if it failed in the right manner it could allow part of the "voice" signal to "feed back" into the line.
They aren't expensive a simple subsitution "new one for suspect one" should tell you almost immediately

I like what dr_roberts49 pointed out, the industry isn't old enough to say much about the filters

when I got my package from Verizon it came with 3 filters for the line and one big one for a wall hung phone, I just have to rember where I put them

When i do and put the new filter on , we shall see if there is a increase in my speed

although the filters are the same age, the "new" one is unused

I'll post back when I find them

Hmm........maybe I'll publish my findings, maybe I'll find the old "new" ones and buy new "new" ones and compare them

or do a lot of stop and start surfing..
