USB cable modem and adding a PC
Hi, I have an RCA USB cable modem. Now I want to hook up another PC. On networking I know next to nothing. Neither of the PC's has a NIC. Both have USB ports. I **think** what I need to do is to buy 2 routers that have USB. Then from the modem use a CAT5 cable to the first router. From there use USB to the first (current) PC. Run a CAT5 from the first router to the second (about 30 feet) and then USB from that one to the second PC. What I don't know is just about all I need to. Are there routers that have USB? Can routers be connected the way I outlined? Is there a better approach? Thanks, Tom

OK, Neither computer has a NIC card. Now it's..
cable--modem--usb--pc
and I'd *like* to keep it that way if I can. Sides I'm not sure one of the PC's HAS an empty slot for a NIC card. So, what I'm wanting is something that'll let me..
cable--modem--cat5--router--usb--pc
Now, since the two PC's are more than 5 meters apart and the second doesn't have a NIC would:
--cat5--router--usb--pc
/
cable--modem--cat5--router-<
\
--usb--pc
work? On the other hand, the USB I have is 1.0 so,
would it be significantly better to upgrade to USB 2.0 or should
I try shoehorning a NIC in there?? If a NIC will fit in both PC's is
there a savings (money or speed) going:
cable--modem--cat5--router--cat5--nic1--PC1
\
cat5--nic2--PC2
Thanks, Tom

Hmmm, the picture looked good while I was typing it but obviously got changed. So, using words:
cable in to the modem, cat5 to the router,
and now two alternate choices, either;
router by way of usb to PC1 and cat5 to router2 and USB to PC2
or router using cat5 to nic on PC1 and cat5 to nic on PC2.
The second option would only be if the nic cards would fit (if there's an open slot).

usb networking is possible but not something you really want to mess with
like i posted, if you dont have space for a network card in your computer, they make network card you plug right into the usb which use cat 5. of course with usb 1.0 you will be limited to 11 mbps instead of 10/100 pci network cards offer

Morning GroundZero3, the PC is my parents so when I check it out, IF it doesn't have room for a NIC should I replace the USB card (assuming it isn't built into the MB) with one for 2.0? Thanks.

well usb 1 should work fine if your going to check email or surf the web, but if your going to transfer large amoung of data over the network then you will want to look into the usb 2 or network card solution because it will be slow
Since its your parents, i assume they will be using it to check email and surf the web, so usb 1 should be enough for them so no need to spend more money when you dont need too | |

Weeelll, it's aktshually a leetle comp-ti-li-cat-ed. The parents will use it primarily for email and surfing but do listen to the Grand Ole Opry from WSM in Nashville. The PC in the basement is going to be used with Roger Wilco (or something like it), a camera and microphone to connect role-playing gamers in two locations. Soo,
given da new info, Should it be: USB 1.0, USB 2.0, ethernet or should I be looking into someting altogedder else ??? Thanks !

how many usb slots do you have?
even if you have cable internet, the usb will not slow it down. because most broadband users average around 2 - 3 megs down. so the usb wont affect any speeds. What i was talking about is if you transfer large amounts of data in the LAN. like divx movies or whatnot.
Curious on what type of computer your parents have?
