black and white when connect laptop to tv

When I connect my HP nx9010 laptop to my Phillips TV the picture is in black and white. I use Winodws XP Pro and the tv and laptop are connected in the following manner. A 4 pin s-video cable connects the laptop to a scart adaptor as my tv does not have an s-video port. The scart adaptor is then plugged into the back of the tv.

Something else that might help you negotiate the problem is that if i play a DVD on the laptop the video is not displayed on the tv while it is displayed on the screen of the computer.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?
