Lost all sound

Hi,

I have lost all sound and don't know why. I was playing a CD when the sound just stopped. I didn't get any error messages. I tried restarting and that didn't fix it. I don't know what to check or where to check for this. I did make sure that all the cables were not loose. Is there a way to test for sound?

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? Sometimes they get corrupted

No, I haven't tried that. I don't know how to do that. Could you explain how to do that to me? Sorry, I haven't had a computer very long and trying to learn. I have Windows XP.

What sound card do you use?

This may sound stupid, but did you make sure you didn't press mute or turn the volume down?

Yes, I did check the volume controls and they are not set to mute.
On the sound card, I'm sorry that I sound stupid not knowing anything but I don't know how to find out what kind it is. Can you tell me where to look, please?

It is a HP Pavilion v70s with Windows XP.

Are you sure it is v70s, hp tells me it is a monitor and not a computer ???

You're right. I was looking at the monitor and not the tower. It's a HP Pavilion 533w. I am very new to computers and I don't know what I'm doing and don't know how to ask properly for help, sorry.
