DivX is a video codec.

The person making the avi has their choice of audio codec. This can be anything from AC3 to MP3 to OGG. Pretty much anyhting you want to use.

So to answer your question, depends on what the audio codec is.

There is a defunct hack of Windows Media Audio known as DivX Audio. It is deprecated and not considered viable for current generation encoding. It also does not support traditional surround sound beyond 2-channel stereo.

I recommend using AAC or WMA for surround-based content.
