Someone Help me if they can

I am having a problem with my comp when i try to run disk defrag. It tells me that i have to run scandisk to fix it but when i run scandisk my comp freezes on me. I am running Windows me on a pent3 866. If anyone knows how i can get my comp to run again all advice would be apreciated. Sorry for the spelling. Preferably dont want to spend more money on fixing this comp, if noone knows how to do this if someone could tell me how to formate my harddrive and start over with win me that would also be nice. Thanks all

What OS are you running?
Try to run scandisk from safe mode... its the more reliable method. (only thing better is to run it from pure dos, but I think safe mode should do the trick here)

(while you're booting up when its at the end of the BIOS screen start hitting F8 until you get the prompt to go into safe mode)
