802.11a range problems

Hey i got a question if anyone has any ideas on how i can boost my 802.11a signal, i am about 10 feet from the access point going through one wall, and i am lucky if i get half of a signal most of the time. I was wondering if anyone has some tips or knows of a repeater for 802.11a. I have only found repeaters for 802.11b and g.

do you have any kind of electronics by the access point? are the antennas pointing straight up and down?

update the firmware and wireless card drivers?

the access point is mounted on the wall with the antenna's going parrallel to the wall. There is no electronics near the access point and the drivers and firmware were all updated.
