Server+ what do you think?

I am really really thinking on postponing my windows cert and tackle the the CompTia Server+ exam, as my main focus on my career is networking, and I want my certs to reflect that. I've already decided to go back to college to finish of my AA degree in computer networking, so I think this will bloster my resume in the time being.

I really want to move into network security, but that is getting crazy, and a little more than I want to tackle just yet.

Of my networking experience, I have 2.5 years in a federal government networking and 3 years + in a state position (school district) supporting 20 schools, 1 District office. I have dealt with 10/100/1000 meg networks, and fiber, and now working with wireless and encryption

I think any and all certs are worth having..its justfiguring out where you want to spend your time and energy. I think you are doing right by trying to envision your career and align your certs up with that.

I havent really seen server+ mentioned a lot....I have seen security+ mentioned..(I think thats the name of it) for instance on the msoft mcsa requirements....as an elective..as an alternative to one of their own certs they will recognize BOTH the A+ and N+ together as one elective..or they will recognize the security+ as one elective....there is no mention of server+.

What I would do is go to www.crn.com and other computer trade type magazines and also the cert sites and look for theor yearly reports on what certs are important to vendors and customers etc etc.

Good luck, JP

I apologize..it seems I was incorrect....I see now that server+ is listed as an alternative for the elective for mcsa.

http://www.microsoft.com/traincert/m...quirements.asp scroll near the bottom

On a lighter note..man what is with all of the Comptia certs now? They have a cert for everything..its getting like batman and robin ..."Ill just pull out my handy 'Bat Alphabet Soup Container'"

see em all listed here, lol. http://www.cramsession.com/certifica...r_name=CompTIA

CDIA+ = Certified Document Imaging Architect lol (how to use a scanner)

HTI+ = Home technology intergrator = "How to rip dvd's"

iNET+ = "How to use google"

eBIZ+ = "how to use ebay"

I say it can't hurt knowledge is knowledge. I have the Server+ not sure it has really helped job wise it seems alot of people don't even know what it is. But like I said it can't hurt. I thought it would be easier than it was, a lot of the questions were pretty long, from what I remember alot of the questions were about disaster recovery, backup questions, server room environment etc.

I think CCNA might be more valuable career wise

I've always looked at the Server+ as a prereq for going to hardware/server vendor specific certs (like Compaq, HP, IBM, etc...)

It is good with the A+ as one elective on the MCSA.

I do think the Server+ is an okay cert as it covers details like SCSI, disaster recovery, UPS's, etc...

Certain jobs might weight it as more important...say if they are hiring a person to take care of backups and stuff like that....a backup/RaiD drive replacer type tech, lol.

Anyway, as stated, it cant hurt. if you arent pursuing any other certs..go for it.
