UPS and Win XP Pro Prob

I recently bought a couple QVS UPSs. These have the serial cable and software and are supposed to shut down the PC when the power goes out. I'm using Win XP Pro. I started on my wifes first. Made sure the com ports were on in BIOS. Plugged in all cables and installed the software all ports were located and it looked good. So for a test I unplugged the UPS. It beeped but never shut down the computer. I went to the control panel, power options, UPS and tried settings there. Everything was recognized, so I pulled the plug on the UPS again and 90 seconds later it shut down the computer. Great. No not great. Now when I boot up and everything is installed no more hour glass on the desktop, the computer logs off and shuts down. Can't do anything. I tried safe mode and removed the software for the UPS. Still does the same. Logs itself off right away. In safe mode I tried control panel, power options, UPS and nothing can be done there. I tried going back to the last known good configuration and that is no help either. Can anybody help? My wife is going to be P.O.

Time for a " System Restore" Go back a few days before you installed the software and cross your fingers

If it helps when I hooked up my CyberPower UPS to my XP Pro machine and installed it Windows never restarted after that. I just used a the generic UPS for type. No Safe-Mode, no System Restore. Nothing.

I didn't try real hard to get it working again but I thought I'd share that you don't feel so bad. Letting the wife know that others have had this problem might help smooth things over too.

Good Luck

Not necessarily. As I said before I didn't try too hard to get XP back. (I was only offering my story to help you out with the wife in case she found out about this already before you fixed it.) Once safe-mode wouldn't come up on my system I got out my RedHat 9 disks and went to town.

It sounds like you're getting the machine to boot up though. Can't you just disable that service and then see if it'll work?

I ran a repair install of XP and it cured the problem. Now I'm chicken to try auto shut down with the UPS again. I need to have it working though. Thanks for the replies folks. I like getting help sometimes.
