Outdoors First, the bad news... NTLDR is missing. ("Not again", they all groan)

The good news is... it's not my computer that is suffering

Just had my friend on the phone complaining that he is receiving the aforementioned message whilst attempting to boot up. His O/S is Windows XP: Home Edition.

I've read all the previous threads on this problem and am confident I can get his system up and running. Only problem is... his computer came with XP factory installed. In other words, neither he, nor I, have the Windows XP cd (I also run XP).

Are we beaten already? Do we have to obtain a Windows XP cd from somewhere?

Thanks for any pointers, in advance.

P.S. Great site. Stumbled upon it whilst google-searching "NTLDR missing". Has now been added to favourites, so beware.. I will be annoying you all with my problems from now on.
