Kids Redhat Install on AMD XP 2000

I have had my Pentium 2 motherboard replaced with a new one with AMD's XP 2000 CPU. I had been assured that AMD chips were compatible with the i386 versions of Linux. So I had no fears.

Now I know that I should have been wary. I reinstalled Redhat 9 on the machine with the same settings and hardware as it had when it was a Pentium II. The only new hardware was the motherboard and devices on it. Redhat detected all the new hardware quite ably including the on board video card.

Instead of the Lilo boot loader, I use Grub.
Here's the problem... after Grub comes up, the OS makes as if it's going to start X Windows... then there's a quick flicker and the monitor goes blank. No messages; no indication of why X Windows did not start.

I need tips on what I can do to find out what the problem is. At this point - without any error message - I can't possibly ask you what you think the fix is.

In connection with trouble-shooting, how do I reconfigure the boot process to use Lilo instead of Grub. (Someone suggested Grub might be my problem).
Thanks.

hello,
I am sure you problem is X related and not anything to do with the amd processor. i am running an amd1800+ right now, and it works great. if not for storms and new kernels i am quite sure i would have a long uptime.

on to the problem!

what kernel do you have, and is agp compiled in - or is it a module? also, what video card and does it work in console mode?

did you change from a video card to an onboard card?
Were you using a compiled driver from Nvidia?

Generally speaking, even with windows its safer to do a reinstall when making a major change like motherboardand processor.

See if we can get ya working though

btw, Welcome to TechIMO

Is the graphics card the same? What is it?
What motherboard is it¿
¿?¿?¿
You've already done a reinstall, that probably wasn't neccesary, but ok.

Redhat Install on AMD XP 2000

Thanks for the swift responses.
No the graphics card changed, vass0922. Came with the motherboard - Redhat probed and identified it as a "savage" from S3 Inc. In the manual that came with the mainboard it's referred to as "Integrated Savage 8 2D/3D Graphic Controller"
Nukes, the motherboard is MS-6738 Micro ATX mainboard. KM2M series. But I'm convinced now that Pbharris is right about the problem being X-related.
I started Linux in Level 3 and reconfigured XF86Config several times, changing settings like the HorizSync and VertRefresh. But each time I typed 'startx', once again the monitor would just flicker and go blank. In fact the monitor seems to go into sleep mode right away.
Now I think I'll just go to Xfree86.org to poke around. There might be a mention of Savage driver. Hopefully some info on how to get it to work with X windows.
Any other ideas more than welcome. Thanks all.
