weird internet problems

hey guys hows it goin...

ive got a weird problem to fix b4 i get my new pc on this one,

ok, i have a p3 800 running on xp pro, and dsl through sympatico. I have my pc networked with 2 other pcs in the house (a dell latitude cpi and a dinosaur p1 200)

ok now get this, i just formatted like 3 days ago (stupid mblast worm) and i deleted the partition, got the fix for it all that good stuff, and it worked great internet was running good pc was running good games were running good (not that i have any to brag about). But yesterday i turn it on, connect to the internet, go into my multiplayer game (sof2 ) and i am laggin like crazy
i unplug the other pcs ftrom the hub (dsl is on the network also) and i still have the same problem, i restart , still the same problem. I look at my ingoing outgoing internet stuff, (u know when u click the little icon and it shows u the ingoing outgoing transfers) and my outgoing transfers are going mad, ive had the pc on for an hour and its at like 30 000 000 kbs outgoing.

now i figure this is the link to my constant lag, but ewhat the hell is it?? anyone know how i could fix this, please help!! thanks

Something like that can happen if another program is running in the background using up your system resources. After your system boots up, before you run any applications, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. This will open the Windows Task Manager. Click the Performance tab. The CPU usage should be 1% or close to that. Also check the PF (Memory) Usage. Should be less then 512MB (closer to 100MB). If your CPU usage is say 60% then something else is running on your system in the background. If this is the case then click the processes tab and see whick process is running. The system idle process should be close to 100% when nothing is running.

I don't know about your problem ( have you restarted your modem and router ??? ) , however you can spend hours at this site tweaking XP.

IMO:

I just deleted a new file(virus) form many of my clients computer systems. (Qhost-1 and Qhost-dl) are the names it is known by. It is a browser/internet hijacking trojan. I had to run Ad-Aware to locate it, because norton/pc-cillin and mcafee wouldnt find it. It does exactly what you were explaining and messed alot of things up. This may be whats wrong with your system.

Just an Idea...

Obviously something else must be running according to your original post. Did you check the task manager for any processes running when none should be?

Any time a process sucks up most of your processors resources it can make you pc act lethargic. My suggestion is to figure out what else is running when nothing should be. Especially if its a virus emailing itself to all your friends behind your back.

Do you use Kazza or any other shared file program?

Outside people could be busy accessing your shared files since the last Kazza session.
