FTP Question

I have a website being hosted by ipowerweb.com

Using the online control panel, lets assume that I setup an ftp account with the user id: bob and the password: bobx and that the ftp account is given access to mysite.com/bob/ (this is all fictional )

Now I am using an ftp program called WS_FTP.

I tried entering the following into WS_FTP in order to test the account but it did not work:

Host Name/Address: ftp.mysite.com/bob/
Host Type: Automatic detect
User ID: bob
Password: bobx

I get the message:
530 Login incorrect
! Login failure, so quitting

What am I doing wrong?

Is WS_FTP giving you the error message and from which end, client or server? If you're doing this remotely, are you sure you have the client and the server programs running on their appropriate ends?

Yes WS_FTP is giving me the error message from my end, I guess that would be client.

I have used WS_FTP successfully before, to access the standard/default account that was made for me, however I'm having trouble accessing this new account that I made.

Did you actually put that in the address field? It should be 'ftp.mysite.com' instead of 'ftp.mysite.com/bob/'. Once you log in with the username you made, it should automatically go to that username's default directory. No need to place it on the address field.

I doubt that would account for the error message he recieved... which indicated that the username and/or password he entered was incorrect.

Some hosts have whacky login systems. At my host, if I setup an FTP account with the username bob and the site's address is mysite.com, my username that I would have to access the FTP server with would be bob@mysite.com .. Like an email address.

I suggest having a closer look at the control panel, to see if it says anything about how you have to enter the username when logging in.

Good luck.

I think No Limit is on the right track

try ftp.mysite.com because the /bob path is usually implied by the user name and are you sure you need ftp infront?....also try just mysite.com

trying the long form won't hurt either

ftp://bob@mysite.com:21

Also, make sure you can ping mysite.com from a command prompt ... just to see if it resolves to an IP address.

If the website was just created, it may take a day or so fo the host record to propogate thoughout the internet. If this is the case and you don't want to wait then you ISP should be able to give you the IP address. Then you could go straight to the IP address (instead of ftp.mysite.com enter the IP address into the WS_FTP dialog.)

Problem solved, I was entering the path in the wrong way and I also misunderstood how it generated the username.

It's all working now, thanks guys.

when I ftp my little page, I have to log in at : "ftp-www.earthlink.net
then it will ask for a user name and password. some will need the whole login name. dfgd@earthlink.net.

just a thought.

Rick

slow... did not see that you already solved it.
