Have you tried repairing IE yet?

Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.
Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

BTW, Welcome to TechIMO!!!

Mike

if you are using a dialup modem, then check your dialup number hasn't been tampered by a dialler program. also check your settings are allowing you to work online and that outlook express is not closing your connection. do you get the same type of problems in any other browsers, such as mozilla or opera?

Before I would run sfc /scannow I would try a system restore point from a couple of days ago or a date just previous to the problem. Create a restore point for today first.

Cheers!

Thank you for the warm welcome, Mike!

And thank you all for helping me out!
Unfortunately my IE still won't work
I downloaded Mozilla last night though and it works just fine.
So I don't think it's a connection's problem. I tried installing and uninstallling IE plenty of times but nothing happened.
Any more ideas?

thanx again!

Spybot Search and Destroy is complimentary to Adaware and will find many issues that Adaware wont. I use them both and have very few browser issues.

The exact same problem happened to me before too-java script not working and couldn't repair/reinstall IE.

If you haven't sorted it out already, I'd suggest reformatting hard drive and reinstalling XP. That fixed it for me but I still haven't figured out what was wrong.

It's a hassle cause you'll lose all your files (unless you have another hard drive or CD-RW drive to backup files) but if IE is that important I'd give it a try.

Again, it worked for me but I'm not gaurenteeing anything .
