Anyone want to help?
Hello. I'll cut to the chase here. I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in helping me write a library catalog system for a college in Nairobi, Kenya. I told a friend over there I'd do my best to get this system sent to him by Christmas, or shortly thereafter. Would anyone be interested in volunteering their time to help me code this? I'm not getting a dime for this, so either will you. This is strictly volunteer work. Anyone willing to help out so I can meet this (flexible) deadline, and help the missionaries in Kenya, either reply to this thread or send me a PM. Below are the features this program will require.
Web-based client / admin section
Searchable database (by book title, author, description, etc)
Clean and easy to manage HTML pages (preferably templates)
Not really too much to implement. I would do this by myself, but trying to find the time is really difficult for me with school and work. Anyway, if you're interested feel free to reply. Thanks for looking guys.... |

prae, talk to me online, i'll see what i can do.
FYI ped, he did missions work over there and is helping someone out. Apparently some of us aren't familiar with good deeds.....
If you are going to post in this thread dont make a worthless post questioning why he volunteered. Either offer help, sources of information, or be quiet.
It isn't his lack of knowledge, but the scope and workload that is the trouble. But way to go, you're pretty.

Hey, thanks for a productive post pedantic. I really don't appreciate it in my thread.
As krohnjw said, I was in Kenya for about a month this summer doing Christian missions work. I did not expect to go over there and work on computers, but coincidentally they needed computer work done at this college, and there I was. I was able to accomplish quite a bit for them while I was there, but one of the tasks I was not able to accomplish due to time constraints (there are much better things to do than work on computers for a month) was this library catalog system. I'm a full-time student, and I also work part time for an internet service provider in town. I start my day at 6:00am, and don't end up back home 'till about 6:30pm. By the time I finish with other volunteer work I do, and taking care of things around the house, it's about 8:00pm that I find time to possibly do some programming.
I told my friend in Africa that I would try to complete this program for him in order to make things around the college easier for he and his staff. I want to get this program done ASAP, but I know that won't happen with my current school/work schedule. I'm simply asking for help with this program. If I get zero volunteers, I'm still going to write the darn program. With a little help the program can be done sooner, and I can send it off to the missionaries in Kenya. If you don't want to help, don't. Don't say a word, don't post a darn thing. In fact, keep your comments to yourself. You're really not contributing to this thread/project at all, unless your contributions are nothing but running your mouth.

I'm not a PHP expert by any stretch, but this doesn't sound overly complex. If you need my help with anything, feel free to let me know. |

Brandon: This isn't complex at all. The only issue I have is time. If you guys are willing to each take on a certain part of the program (we'll work out a framework soon), we could have it done in no time.
bfcx: I'm not a Perl coder, so the only problem I have with that is if the program ever breaks, or new features need to be added, I will not be able to help my friends, and I'll probably have to find a Perl coder, or just re-write and/or add a whole block of code. I would love to have you help though. I'll PM you later this evening and we'll talk...
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm glad to see some people are interested in helping. I'll try to reply later on tonight with exact details of what I need (could be long...), and you can volunteer to take care of a certain section if you wish. The features I had planned are very basic, but if you've got any ideas for things to add, let me know and we can throw them in there. I'm always open to ideas.
BTW, I've got the server to host the program and MySQL db while we work on it, so no need to worry about that. |
