Ppl can't join my networked server

Ok, I have my computer upstairs networks with teh comp downstairs (my comp has the base station, wireless network)
My friends can't join, I remember hearing something about needing to change a setting or something, Is there something I can change so people can join?

You probably have a firewall that wont let other people access your server.

As in...what OS'es on the computers??

And maybe the basic layout of the network?

well they are both the exact same computer, Windows XP
they are about 5 metres max away from each other, one is up stairs other is below
I think it has something to do with the settings, not a problem
All my friends who have networked internet i can't join their server either
