How do I format a hard drive?

I got a new 120gb hard drive but I can't get it to work. The bios shows the drive as being there and Windows Control Panel says the drive is there and working, but when I go to Windows Explorer, the drive does not show up.
I assume the drive is not listed because it is not formatted.

Windows XP Home
120gb 7200rpm Maxtor hdd on Primary Slave IDE.

Start>Control Panel (Classic View)>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management>Right Click on the new drive and hit format.

TweakUI, X-Setup, TweakXP type utilities have an option to show\hide drives in explorer, if you have such a util installed find the option and place a check mark next to all drive letters to prevent it happening again.
