A Lithium Ion battery just refers to the chemical compound inside that creates the voltage, like an alkaline battery or whatever. The upside to a Lithium Ion is that they have a very long life, typically 5 to 10 times longer than an alkaline. They're available in a lot of the common sizes for general battery types as well as a lot of the specialty sizes for cameras.
A Lithium Ion battery in a digicam is a real good idea, since the camera takes a lot of juice and will eat up your normal "coppertops" in about no time flat. I use a digicam daily in my job. A set of alkalines is good for about 1-2 weeks, a set of Lithiums, about 6 months. More expensive to begin with, but the longer life makes them a better deal in the long run.
