changing clock freq

OK you've got me interested in overclocking... have a P4 1.5 socket 423... found a mobo owner manual on web.. it say you can change cpu freq in bios.... hold down "del" during power up.

that didn't happen.. my owners manual on system say hold "f2" down... that gets me into the bios, but the "advanced" screen is completely different then the mobo manual had shown.

so after all that, any tricky ways to change from 1500 mhz to ... oh say 1800 mhz?

Well, on the mobo it says WMT-LE. Somewhere on the web I found that it is the same as a P4T-M made my Asustek. Per the mfg. website the p4t-m owner's manual shows it as identical...

well, expect for the advanced screen on the bios... mine shows 1500 mhz on the advance screen, but it doesn't let you into that line for input to change it.

If you will post a link to the manual we can take a look at it. I don't have time to go searching for it, but if you can point us to it then someone can download it and check it out.

Some mobo's settings are set by jumpers on the board, others (newer) are adjustable in the bios setup. Some are not adjustable, but are fixed by the default settings for the installed cpu. This means that some mobo's can not be overclocked.

OK, I downloaded and went to page 51.

It says "Notes: The speed of locked processors may not be adjusted."

This means that cpu's that have there clock speed fixed can not be changed. Dirty trick from Intel (Many AMD's are locked also).

Many Mobo's will allow you to adjust the FSB (Front side bus) clock and thus change the CPU clock, the cpu can not detect that, however your mobo does not seem to be very tweakable.

Don't know if your CPU can be "unlocked". Most AMD's can be with a tricky mod, but I'm not up on Intel.

well, I'm into it now, so I guess the "mod" that I need to do to up my clock speed............ r&r the mobo, putting in one that is the speed I want. AMD FX seems like the quickest, but I doubt that I would ever utilize all its power.. wait, that's what I said about my pentium 166 mhz machine

thx for the info, I appriciate you spending your time on this.

I built my wife a system using a 1.6 P-4 (16.0 x 100 fsb "400mHz Quad-Pumped") and immediately turned it into a 2.134mHz P-4 by setting fsb from 100mHz to 133mHz (16.0 x 133 = 2134mHz).
Mobo is an Asus P4S533.

You may be able to do same. As others indicated, the CPU mutiplier is locked, so you only have fsb speed to play with.

I've been from one end of this bios setup to the other, it pretty well only lets you set very minor parameters.

through sisoft sandra... says fsb is 4x100mhz (400 mhz data rate).... then, maximum fsb speed/ max memory speed 4x133mhz/2x532mhz

I'm guessing, but what that tells me is right now it's the 4x100mhz... then if I could find a way to change it, I could go as far a 4x133mhz. familar with sandra info?
