Auto Vcore?

I noticed this a few days ago on my Asus A7N8X...

System: Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0, Athlon XP 2200+
OC: 166(333)FSB x 11.5, 1921.0 GHz

BIOS Vcore: Auto/1.65
Actual Vcore: 1.71 (CPU-Z, MBM 5, Asus PC Probe)

The BIOS says Vcore is 1.65 but the above mentioned apps detect it as 1.71. Could this be because with Vcore on "Auto", it's compensating for the overclock by automatically upping the voltage for me? If so, that is really cool

Or is something really screwed up here, lol? System is running fine, no problems at all, system temps are normal. 1.71 seems a little high to me... is this within safe limits?

There's been few threads (including one by me) about the issue.
My vcore should be 1.75V. Bios reports it 1.75V, asus probe/mbm report it as 1.85V.

At viaarena asus forum I received a reply that, asus ups the vcore automatically for whatever reason (stability I recall).

Adjusting the setting from bios had no effect, adjusting the setting via jumpers always resulted vcore of 2.??V which was VERY unacceptable.

Interesting... the manual isn't exactly clear on this. It just says the Auto setting "determines if the CPU Vcore is automatically scaled or set manually by the user" and "therefore, the CPU Vcore voltage is set for maximum performance without stressing the CPU". It doesn't mention if this is specifically related to overclocking. Odd that there's no mention of this as a "feature" in the manual or other literature.

What mobo/CPU combo do you have that requires 1.75V? Is that the default for a Barton core?

The cpu I have is just 1.75V by default, it's the earliest athlonxp model, 1800+ namely - and whatever core it first came with.

Mobo is asus a7v266-c.

I'm not rich enough to see if the vcore would still be 1.85V on some other mobo
But, as long as it runs, I'm happy
