My computer Keeps Locking Up w/XP Pro

Hello,
I have a Compaq Desk Pro EN 866 P3, I just installed WinXP Pro. I have been using this XP for about 5 days now and then
it just decides locks up on me. before XP I was running Win 2000 Pro and it never locked up. I fdisked and formatted the HD, installed win 98 se and then upgraded to win XP pro. I can be in the middle of typing a letter in MS Word and it will just lock up.
The letters I am typing will stop displaying on the screen and I can continue to type while it's locked up and then it will unlock about 45 seconds later and everything I continued to type while it was locked up will come up, 45 seconds later it will lock up again. If I restart it, then it may not lock up for a ½ hour or so. Can anyone help me on this one?

Thanks
Jack

I tried that with the Home version..install 98 first, etc. It didn't fly.
Format your HD, set bios to boot from CD. Reboot with XP disc in the drive. Installation will ask for a previous OS. Slip in your 98 disc and finish the install. Haven't had any problemo that way.

First off need more info:
How much RAM, what file system are you using, NTFS or FAT32.

Basing how you updated from Win98, which itself is a bad decision, you are running FAT32.
My sugestion is to format and install win XP from scratch and use NTFS.
Also if you have too little ram it may casue the system to freeze up.
you should have atleast 256 mb.
