Laptop Hard Drive Error

I have an IBM Thinkpad 600. CMOS battery recently died and had to be replaced. Now it won't boot. WinXP hangs during boot-up. For some reason it won't boot from a floppy either. When using the diagnostics, I get the following error codes for the HDD: DEV 017, ERR 04, FRU 6010.

I tried reinstalling WinXP after booting from the WinXP CD, and setup appeared to run. However, when all was said and done, it still hangs during boot (on the WinXP flash screen).

Any ideas? At the least, is there a way to boot from a floppy that will allow me to retrieve some files?

Thanks.

Do oyu know what brand hard drive you have?? Maybe you could download the manfgr's boot disc and run their utilties. I saved two hard drives that would not load windows by writing zeros then formattinjg but you have to have the manfgr's utlities.

I'm sure I could find out who the manufacturer is. This option, while it may rescue the drive, sounds like it will kill the data on the drive. I was hoping to save some of it.

Problem solved: when I pulled out the hard drive to determine the manufacturer, I discovered it wasn't orinal equipment. Thus, when I installed a new CMOS battery, the laptop reverted to original settings and could not recognize the hard drive. Installing a BIOS update allowed the laptop to use the hard drive. I still had to reinstall the operating system, but all the files were still there.

Thanks for your help.

Same Problem on a 770z Thinkpad

I am having the same problem. Laptop was purchased from a reseller with 90 day warranty. It worked fine for 60 days. Then started getting Error DEV 017 ERR 01 FRU 6010 and the machine will not boot. I have not modified the computer at all. The reseller is shipping me a new hard drive. The hard drive just sets and clicks
