dsl questions please help

im am thinking about getting a dsl line, i no i should go with cable but thats not an option, dont ask. anyways i herd from someone that dsl lines are like phone lines, if so would i be able to send and receive faxes with a fax number through my dsl line? also the package im looking at says 384 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps downstream and 128 Kbps upstream, im guessing thats the speed so how fast is it compared to a cable modem at its fastest? http://promo.yahoo.com/sbc/?refer=dsl0 is where im gettin this information. someone please help im really stumped

dsl uses the phoneline and the 1.5/128 is nice. that is about the average cable speed. I have 768/128 dsl. It means i can downstream at a max of 768 and upload at a max of 128. No those speeds are not being compared to cable.

cable and dsl are equal, each has its advantages.

When they specify 384Kbps - 1.5Mbps, this is the download speed. Like if you downloaded a driver for your video card. Now with DSL the farther you are from the Central Office the lower the download speed. The Typical DSL range is 18000 ft or about 3.5 miles. So depending on how close you are to the central office will determine your download speed. They are saying "you won't download any faster than 1.5Mbps and not any slower than 384Kbps"

The upload speed is 128Kbps, no matter what. If you want to upload a file to your ftp site, it will upload at 128Kbps.

As far as faxing, you can still use an analog modem on the same phone line the DSL is on. You would be able to receive faxes. With DSL you add filters in series with all of your analog phones and faxes. They will supply you with these.

Actually what they are saying, is that we have dsl service from speeds of 384 to 1,5mbs. You can have downstream of 384kbs, 768kbs or 1,5mbs. And upstream of 128kbs, 256kbs or 384kbs respectively.

Adsl speed does not differ, it's always the same. You pay for the service and you get the service.

Um. If I wasn't clear enough, the offered speeds are like this ->
384/128, 768/256 and 1500/384.
The faster you want to go, the more you pay.

That's very odd. I can't find any detailed information about the consumer dsl they're selling.
There's a slight difference in how dsl is sold there and here

However, as for the original question. I don't think you'll be able to send/receive faxes via your dsl connection, you'll need the phone line for that.

I could not find the actual Up/Down speeds for residential DSL on the Verizon site. Of course they have comparisons between dsl and cable, but no actual numbers posted. If find that extremely irritating and would lean me away from DSL.

As far as faxing. DSL uses the same phone line as your analog phone. Like I post above, you can't fax using DSL, but you can fax if you have analog modem on the line.

analog modem??? if i had that i would be able to send and receive faxes through the dsl line not my main phone line right? also i no this is a noob question but is dsl like cable where ur always connected?

Your dsl line is your phone line. The same wire pair carries the analog and digital signals. You don't need two seperate lines. So the fax will go through that same line.

Hey speedyvision once you get DSL you better get a firewall. The second the outside world notice that your connected to the internet 24/7/365 they are going to ping you like there is a fiesta on your computer and everybody is welcome and thats not a good thing. I use zonealarm which you can find at http://www.zonelabs.com . There are more out there so just ask around to see which one you like.
