problem installing ram

i just bought 512 sdram to upgrade my computer, but when I put it in and started the system an error came up at the start screen saying some system file was missing. I bought the right kind of ram, so what could it be? i have a dell 1.8 Ghz, windows xp

it would help us help you if you give a little more disctiption of the error /what file it said it was missing and more info on your machine ex. motherboard (if you know) what size/type ram did you have in to begin with

cjedi, is it something like "\windows\system32\config...bla..bla..."? if it is, let us know about it.
