Okay reading implexant post I got the bright idea again of doing something that seems impossible. (Right now this is just in theory and for my own learning)

I have two friends that live about 2 miles, maybe 3 at the most. And I want to purchase this antenna to connect them to my network and visa versa.

Now the fun part. Since each person and my self have internet I just want to be able to share off my files and for gaming.

Here is the setup:

I have the new linksys g wireless router sharing off my internet. (Soon to be a Linux firewall and just use the wireless part of the router)

Person 1 has a linksys wireless Access point and Cable internet (shared off from linksys router)

Person 2 has a Roamabout (old military hardware donated) Wireless access point and Cable internet shared off from a linksys router

If I was success in able to get them to be able to see my network from the wireless this is where it gets complicated

I don’t want them to use my internet only be able to browse my network. Now I don’t want them to grab an ip address from me either since they have DHCP from there own linskys routers.

Is this even possible and if so would I have to buy expensive equipment to accomplish this?

Just food for thought on my part. I know DVNT1 asked something like this for his work and his cable line.

Thanks

Jason

GZ3,

You will run into a problem with the IP's, unless each one of you uses the same subnet (with different IP's) and same subnet mask. But even if you do that, your friends will need to use the same workgroup name that you use. Then you would have to give out your password or make them users on your network.

How is your home network configured, workgroup or domain? Have you considered VPN for this?

right now i just have a peer 2 peer network using a workgroup. i have no problem allowing them access to my computers as i work with these two guys and they know what there doing so they wont do stupid stuff.

each computer ip address is from the linksys router. as for the other two guys

they are using the linksys router so they all have 192.168.1.* numbers. i guess we could set up so i use 192.168.1.1-10 someone else uses 11-20 and the last guy uses 21-30.

never really played with vpn or domains. i think the vpn solution might be the best as it will offer more secuirty correct?

of course this is a work in progress

Wireless can be secure if you change the name of the default SID and only allow client's with specific MAC addresses access. No two MAC addresses are the same. (I'm sure you know this). You can also use encryption on top of this. But the distance of two miles is pretty damn far, and I don't know what the FCC regulations are on this wireless stuff.

VPN is secure. The way to view it is a small tunnel running through a larger tunnel. The larger tunnel is the internet. The small tunnel is the VPN connection. The internet cannot see into the the vpn tunnel. On each end of the tunnel is an IP address. If you had the VPN server at your crib, your buddies would create a VPN connection on their pc. They would call the IP address assigned to you by your ISP. They would need a username and password created by you on your vpn server. That is you need to create users for your buddies on your server, then when they connect they need to use the username and password that you assigned. They would NOT be able to use their own user info that they use when they logon to their own pc.

You don't need to implement a domain for this to work, but my setup has a domain at each end, (home and work) with linksys routers on each end, and cable on each end. VPN works flawlessly this way.

Another idea: don't use DHCP and use two IP addresses. One for your LAN and gateway, another (but separate) range for the wireless connection.

So on your computer, put 192.168.0.x/24 and 10.0.0.x/24 for the IP address. Only the 192.16.0.0 would have a default Gateway and DNS IP settings.

Then if the others did theirs manually like 192.168.1.x/24 and 10.0.0.3/24 and so on (this may not be possible depending on their router's abilities to use different LAN IP range).

That would keep them separate for the Internet but still able to share files.

WIth VPN over Interent, you are restricted by ISP bandwidth uploads/downloads limitations. If you use a direct wireless connection, you are limited via signal strength and equip. stds. you chose.
