IE can not access web

I had started another thread about my media players being unable to access th einternet...then realized that neither can Internet Explorer(mods please delete other thread). I do not use IE except for when I have to visit Earthlink because it is the only browser that works for uploading photos to my web space on Earthlink's servers.

Here is the problem...
I can not get IE to access the web...I get the can not find internet page with the detect settings thing. I will click detect internet and nothing happens. I reinstalled IE6 and the same thing. ALso, my media players can not access the web either. None of them. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of them and nothing works. I have shut down Zone Alarm and still no luck.

I can still access the web with Netscape, Opera, and my mail still works(Outlook Express)...it is just I need IE for uploading to my web space and media players to listen to internet radio and sportscasts.

Oh yeah...my antivirus program(AVG) can not access the web to update either. I ran a virus scan and nothing was detected...but I can not update the virus database.

Any ideas?

In Tools > Internet Options have you checked your settings? May have to go to > Setup New Connection.

Can you ping any of these sites by name that you can't get too? This is just a shot in the dark here but..

Check the 'Connections' tab under 'Internet Options'. Click the 'LAN Settings' button and make sure the 'Automatically detect settings' is unchecked.

I can not access any site with IE. I have no problems with Opera or Netscape. I am downloading the Stinger program that was listed in that link...hopefully it works. Otherwise I can try that Norton fix.

Unfortunately it wasn't that. It would have been nice but I figured it wouldn't have been because I can not access the web with my media players as well.

Stinger just found a virus named MsProt32 that I had been meaning to post about on this site...I kept forgetting and then I would see all of the programs that are initiated at start up then think about asking about it here and I would get busy and forget about it Stinger is still running and I will post back when it is finished if that took care of it.

I am kind of curious...why did AVG not find it?

I had a similar problem where IE and a bunch of other programs wouldn't access the internet, either. After week or so I just formatted my HD and re-installed Windows.

Curious... what's Stinger? Also, I would like to know how you solved your problem just in case I run into the same problem again.

hmm...still no luck. I ran stinger and it found 2 trojans and removed them...I then ran the Norton FixQhost and it found nothing. I restarted my computer and scanned again. Neither program found a virus...but I still do not have access to the web with IE or the other programs I had listed.

tgxiii...Stinger is a virus scanner that seems to do a pretty good jog...it caught 2 trojans my antivirus program missed. Here is a link to it http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

I am still unable to access the web with my programs and a reformat was not something I was not really planning on doing...although I suppose it is an option of all else fails.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the link.

I think you may have done these already, but some things that were suggested to me:

- Format and re-install
- Windows updates
- AdAware AND Spybot (not just one)
- Registry cleaner (like one found on Norton System Doctor)
- Run EVERY online virus scan you know

Good luck. I hope you don't have to resort to formatting like I did.

Just a shot in the dark here, but what if you were to remove all your connection and network settings, reboot, and try to establish a new connection from scratch?
