Philips CD r/rw -not being recognized as cd r/rw

I have a Philips CD r/rw Model # cdd4851
this drive is recognized as a cdrom under windows 98se
I have tried to install a couple different wares to recognize it (adaptec versions 3-5, and clonecd-which just pissed me off)
I have no idea how to get this thing to burn- I even updated the firmware.
My thoughts are maybe roxio...nero
I don't know,is there any thing free or demo that I can try?
What about Windows media player 9 will that help?
There has to be something out there...
Thanks for your time and effort in responding.
David

Are you sure you have the jumpers set correctly ??? Tried on the other IDE channel??? Maybe a different cable?? Mine work the best with the burner as master on IDE 2 and the CD Rom as slave on the primary. The software should have nothing to do with being recognized by the computer. I use Adaptec 4 that came with my Plextor burner on all my burners. Good luck

As said before, make sure the jumpers are set right.

Are you using more than one CD ?
I suggest using only one CD device at a time, less conflicts.
Swap the IDE cable too.

1st thing if those don't work, boot into SAFE Mode by holding the Ctrl key during boot, go to device mgr and remove ALL CD Devices shown.. Upon reboot it should find and install the device.

Send a message via ICQ to TOAD6147 Send a message via AIM to TOAD6147
It may also help to check in the BIOS (run the detection utility therein) to ensure it is listing the correct drive and not a different one.

We'll thus far I haven't tried any of the above, It seems however that I am able to burn Cd's Using the roxio app in Win media player 9, So perhaps it is a software issue,The bios does detect it as a cd r/rw-I think it is the software I have been trying know of any thing free that will support Data/Audio burning-Without the spyware/adware....Thanks for the help any further is appreciated. David
Ps-Only one cd device safe mode tio may be the first i try seems logical after the above being obviously correct in that the bios recognizes it as cd r/rw.
