Kids cable Vrs. DSL

Can someone give me the pros and cons of both......specificaly speed. I've heard cable can get slow during prime TV hours, but how slow exactly? and will that not effect me because I'm in a smaller town with the new comcast lines they just put in?

cable is shared bandwidth - meaning it could go down in speed dependng on how many people in your neighborhood are on, or it could go up

dsl - dedicated bandwidth, speed stays the same all the time.

I have never had any problems with cable going slow during tv hours

www.dslreports.com has reviews on local ISP's. check out your area and see what others have said

and your cable internet is not affected by people watching tv as its two different signals. its affect by how many people are on the node your on. Usually the busiest times is from 6 pm - 10 pm because people are coming home checking emails and surfing the web

In San Francisco, SBC has levels of DSL service for the home. The mo' you pays the faster you goes! Check the speed you get before you signs anything!

DSL is better for hosting a gaming server from your house

Started out with cable. DSL came into the area. Switched over due to it being cheaper. Lasted two months. Came back to cable. To up the speed as I was getting from cable the DSL company wanted more than I was paying for cable. Then there was the issue of hosting on a residentual account...

what is "hosting on a residential account" mean.

Cable CAN go faster as it uncapped, but it can alos go slower. DSL is alays same speed, but depending on what you buy, that speed could be slow. 1500kbs DSL is basicaly the same as CABLE,

Joker,

"Hosting on a residential account" is hosting a few servers as a residential customer. Some ISP's block ports so that you can't, without working around it, some will let you host as long as traffic isn't too high and you are set up securely. Once they find the open ports they will check for certian things: warez, adult material, mail servers that are unsecure are just to name a few.

So I signed up for cable. I read some sites that said its easier to hack because its all shared......do I need a firewall of some sort? If so, what do you recomend?
