what system would you suggest??

i'm gonna have to start thinking of a new system for my wife, she plays on the internet, does quicken and a little word, you get the point... need something that i can upgrade later if need be but that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

a question to go with this.. can i drop her cd/rw from her hp in a new system. or does it need special drivers?

Optical Drives don't require any drives.

Get a cheap AMD chip. 1.2 ghz for soemthing like $40 @ newegg.com

cheap case with cheap powersupply.

Someone else will have to reccommend a nice mobo. I would use onboard video since no gaming is involved. Onboard sound and lan too.

Monitor is up to you.

DVD-rom/cd-rw combos are available for $50

Seagate HD's are cheap. Cheap quality though too. May want a Maxtor.

Did I help @ at?

Well when you say you want something cheap... how cheap are we talking? A CPU that would work for her really isnt worth considering upgradability, you'd be better off buliding your PC later on from scratch...

Id say an AMD XP 1700+, 512PC2100 RAM, Asus A7n8x deluxe, you could transfer the CD-RW if you wanted, it should work fine. 40GB HDD would prolly be fine, but for the price of HDDS you mide as well just pick up the 80GB WD from Newegg, on sale for 75 dollars now I think.

You might want to keep and eye on the Doc's Deal's thread.

Doc and the guys sometimes find a Dell deal that can't be beat for the average user, gotta jump on them quick though, or they are gone.
