camera for shooting sports/action

I need to buy a digital camera used primarily for sports/action shots. Got any suggestions?

I don't have suggested camera for use but make sure it has lots of manual features. Idiot proof digital cameras won't do a good job.

You have to be able to adjust shutter speed & aperature as with a film camera.

EG:
Shooting a runner.
Stop action the legs or blur the legs for action effect.
