Couple more links:

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/demos/Demo/

Is for drake 9.0 but gives you an idea of what to expect.

The link below will give you a "virtual" redhat desktop...... it's a working linux desktop..... VEERRRRY slow compared to an actual installed system.........but you can run it through your Internet Explorer web browser if you actually wanted to

Get a book (Linux In a nutshell) and try slackware 9.0

Never could be happier, nothing as easy as mandrake, but much more fun!

I would suggest you Redhat or Mandrake but thats my opinion of course. As far as links: To download fresh ISO's the best site to do this is LinuxISO.org and its totally free. Be sure to use download accelerators though since the files are big

Knoppix as far as I know is a great distro but its not for a newbie which I think you are in the Linux world.

There are demos and live-evaluations as they are called and mensioned before but they are slow and they come automatically with everything which I would think you wont have when you actually install it yourself.

It depends on the system you are using too, which I think you are using an average normal one most of them would work great.

If you want to try Mandrake you could wait a bit since Mandrake 9.2 is being release very soon. I really like Redhat, although its install is a bit more confusing than Mandrake I think its more complete and better made, but of course its my opinion.

I like both, some have things that the other dont have and vice versa. I think its a matter of the users opinion

My suggestion to anyone that is new to Linux is definitely Mandrake 9.1...the install could not be much easier and it looks familiar enough for Windows users to not be completely lost.

Red hat was really tough for me, I tried 6.2 and couldn't even get it installed for some reason...so I borrowed 7.0 from a girl at work and it insatlled fine...I really like that red hat has Glade (a development tool) really cool I don't know if mandrake has it. I am planning on building a new linux box soon I'm thinking mandrake based on the above comments-The interface(red hat) was a bit difficult for me to adapt to coming fro a windows world....Another thing that I'd suggest is that you just build a box for linux any old 386 processor will do, I recommend this because I had alot of trouble with the whole dual boot thing initially and windows dragged like hell. It is also possible to install onto same box just a different hard drive though it can get kinda tricky-I'm quite sure you can handle it though...The other thing is and please don't any one get mad I'm not bashing-LINUX IS HARD TO GET OFF A DRIVE IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL ANY THING OTHER THAN A VARIANT OF THE LINUX KERNAL(i.e windows with ntfs or fat32 partitions)
This statement is just based on my experience, and some ignorance I'm sure...Linux seems to have the potential to take signifcant market share from Microsoft in the years to come, The constant releases seem to get in the way of this a little I think...

You might also try the SuSe live eval if you're looking at knoppix...from what i understand it's pretty easy to use, and it boots soley from a cd. give you a little taste before you dive over.

If you want to go ahead and actually install an OS, i would recommend Redhat or Mandrake. i started out on RH, then went over to Slack (which i LOVE). later i tried mandrake and hated it, but that's cause i was used to slackware and i didn't feel like i had that much power over the OS in comparison ...it seems great for newbies tho.

Also a couple of sites to know and love as a linux beginner:

www.sourceforge.net - almost all linux apps are here

www.linuxquestions.org - excellent forum for tech support...assuming you don't get it here first

www.kde-look.org - tons of customizations for KDE

enjoy
