Western Digital will release 74 Gig Raptors

If you already don't know, Western Digital will release their 10k RPM SATA Drive in a 74 gig drive doubles the capcity of the Raptor, that has 36 gigs. I believe it already is made, and is NOT in the final stages of testing, it is ready for sale, probably being mass produced as we speak. It will be seen in PC-Gamer's Holiday Buyer's guide featured in a Monarch Computer System's machine.

Aww sweet! But it's still only 74GB.... I guess that's enough for most people, but if I was them I'd work on a 120gb version for people with hearty appetites for storage space.

Why do people need that much space. I would understand if someone is using the drives for a server or doing cad work or having a databese server, but for a normal desktop would anyone need more then 76 gigs?

I use my 36GB raptor for my OS and programs, and keep my data on my 200GB IDE. Works nicely, and i keep a ghost copy of the 36gb too, very handy.

Everybody's different. Someone who has many games, MP3's, videos, and tinkers with their rig every day will have more stuff than someone who uses their computer for it's original purpose - A Better White-Out.

newegg only has the 36 gig thus far, for a paltry 117

In reality VERY FEW desktop home users need a 10k RPM SATA 120 gig drive.

However, you will always have the people that require it for no other reason than bragging rights.

heavy CAD/3d modeling etc possibly
gaming no stinkin' way - HD's aren't the bottleneck yet on games.

I'm afraid that i must be the bearer of bad news; 36x2=72 ^_^ Not that i didn't already know that it was a 72GB drive they're releasing, but still, it struck me as odd that no1 picked this up.

"Aww sweet! But it's still only 74GB.... I guess that's enough for most people, but if I was them I'd work on a 120gb version for people with hearty appetites for storage space."

No. First off, 72GB is more than enough for 95% of all people. Well actually more like 98%. Besides, people who need 120GB + of storage generally need more than 120GB of storage.. closer to 250+. So, they're far from shy about purchasing multiple drives, or fast ones, and slower, larger ones, working in tandem.

Now, seeing how the Raptor is really a 10,000 RPM drive built from old SCSI parts, infused with new cache (and 8MB of it), and replaced with an SATA controller/port, they're not going to "develope" larger versions of it. Not in the way they do with ATA drives. I would've thought the 36GB would have tipped you off right away

The whole point of this is to offer SCSI performance, with greatly reduced costs.
