Can't open WORD docs after updates (Office XP)

Did the MS updates of OFFICE XP and now my WORD docs will not open.
The error message I get is File ******* not available.

When I close out the blank screen I get.

"The file normal.dot already exists.Do you want to replace the file"

Sounds like it might just be corrupt.

Go to:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Your profile\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates"

and delete the "Normal.dot". Upon restarting Word, it should replace it w/ a default.

I tried your suggestion for fixing the problem of not being able to open microsoft word documents and getting the message of the file not being available.
However I can not find the Applacation database? Now what do I do from here, please.

Thanks for any help you can give.
