How do I use my computer as a Telephone?

It has a Modem jack.
I have a working Mic.
I can dial out to the Internet.

So why cant I use my computer to dial outside numbers and call people while chatting with them through my headset.

It would also seem most likely that it would be easy to record these conversations since they would be played through my computer.

Hell, would I even be able to use my computer as an answering machine? If I knew any programming I'd make a program myself to do all this stuff since it seems REALLY logically possible.

Open your dialer program, type in your number with a simple flip of the numpad, press enter, dial out, talk it up, possibly hit a nicely placed "record" button to recording the incoming audio as a wave file.

Really......how do I do this, im very interested in it.

i think its because phone modems you are using in the computer is designed to transfer data. not voice

maybe someone else can shed some more light on the subject

there is dialpad.com they used to be free where you could make long distance calls. but not anymore

It can be done. Windows95 has a phone dialer program. And there were several programs that turned your computer into an answering machine with multiple accounts. Havent seen any of it lately, im sure you can find the stuff if you look.

EDIT: win98 does too. Start>Programs>Accesories>Communications>phone dialer.
