I've always been told it should be on the root of the drive that you run chkdsk on. However, I noticed that's not the case. It doesn't seem to show any report under Event Viewer either.

So I just chkdsk from the CMD prompt where I can see detailed info..

As for your truncated file, are you running FAT file system?

For start you should run NTFS over Fat 32.
Windows XP was meant to run on NTFS not Fat 32. Fat 32 is there only for extened compatability. So things like chkdisk which are meant for Fat 32 OSes will not run that well on XP, infact I try to never run it.

As to your file problem sorry but I can't help you.

Windows XP takes a while to get used to but I really like it and I think its not bad at all. Its stability is much better than Windows 9x series and it does work great on powerful machine. If your machine can't handle it you might get a look at Windows 2000 which is also great because of its stability. Windows 98 can be an option but remember it can by time give you more problems than XP since its old and not stable. I would say it depends on the system you are using.

First of all if a file is that important to you and its only 40K copy it to a floppy for a backup or something. Second don't blame XP for running chkdsk, it does this when your hard disk has problems. Third: NTFS is much better at repairing itself when problems like this occur. An Fourth: If you think XP is "junk" and win98 is the answer I think your nuts.

Funny how I guessed the file system you are running, huh?

chkdsk was not intended for FAT or NTFS. However, you will notice that you get more detailed info when running chkdsk under NTFS... Try it..

As far as fault tolerance goes, NTFS is faaaar better. Never have I had file corruption or crosslinked files with NTFS due to it MFT. Of course FAT also has a similar feature, but as you can see, it's not as superior as NTFS's MFT.

And Windows XP was not meant to be run on NTFS. That is just an option you have. As you may know, even NT3.x and 4 had the option to run FAT or NTFS....

So True
I installed Windows XP one time with Fat32 and by the instance I booted the thing it started giving these freaky errors almost BSOD's. Windows XP is not intended to run in Fat32 since it was designed for NTFS. I dont even understand why Microsoft decided to have that choice in Windows XP of the file system. As far as liking more Fat32 file system than NTFS then if you think like this I would agree with meese and think youre nuts. I would even prefer using Linux instead of the 9x series because the stability in that serie is so bad I would be scared to use it daily.
