P4 temps!!!
Hey, all!!!!
Probably this shouldn't be here. I know how most everyone feels about AMD processors. BTW mine is in my linux box
Anyways, I just built my new gaming machine. It is a P4 3.0GHz. When going through the BIOS, I checked the Hardware monitor and it read 68 celsius. I was like this is to high. Still I went on and installed Win XP-Pro. After installing the ASUS Utilities, BTW the mobo is an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, ASUS probe is reading around low 50's celsisus. Thats when I'm browsing the Net, using Winamp, and right now using bittorrent. But, after installing my anti-virus, AVG free-edition, The Temp went from 50 to 70. I'm using the heatsink provided by Intel. I think this is strange.
Do, other P4 owner had the same experience??? What HSK u recommend.
Thanks,
cyberkan |

Is the heatsink on correctly?
Also, try updating the bios as you may be getting flase readings.
Open your case and hold your hand on the heatsink. If your CPU is really 70C, you won't be able to keep your hand on that heatsink.

Something is DEFINATELY not right.
As joker said, make sure the HSF is on correctly. Perhaps reseat it. Also, are you using a thermal pad or something like AS? Maybe reapply that as well. Don't want it too thick or too thin.
Your P4 should not be running that hot.

I have a 3.06 P4 on a gigabyte 8IHXP. Thermaltake spark 7. Room temp is 26C. I get 48C idle and 62-63C load@4400 RPM. I bought a Zalman CNPS7000-Cu. 26.5C room temperature and I was getting 44C idle and 54-55C load@2500 RPM. It seems like it still runs hot, but its an improvement.

Interesting... I wonder what Kazaa had to do with the increase temps of 5~10C?

Hey, thanks for the advise. But, I have been a little busy with school. I checked my heat sink, I guess it wasn't mounted well. But, still the temp only dropped to 44 celsius in idle. I know it might be a little high, but for now it's good, tried to put it under load and it got to at most 60 celsius. I'll have it like that for next month until i get more $$$$ to get another heatsink.
Again thanks for the help.

I'm running a 2.53GHz P4 with a Vantec Aeroflow.
At room temp 72F, Case temp 22.9C, CPU Temp is: 32C.
Under full load I hit around 45C.

My Intel machine is a PIV 2.6C, room temperature of 32C (only spring in Oz!) CPU runs under load at 34/5C, using a zalman copper cooler and sorted airflow in the PC case.
