Controller Card Trouble
Aiite, here goes. Haven't made a post here in a while. :P
I have now, a grand total of 4 hard drives and a CD-RW drive. Now I'm an impatient sucker, so I put everything on its own IDE channel, so I used Primary and Secondary on my MB, and then IDE1 and IDE2 on a Promise Ultra ATA133 TX2 (Maxtor), and now IDE1 on a Promise Ultra ATA100 TX2 (WD).
Basically here's the breakdown of what's on what:
Primary MB: WD 1200JBRTL
Secondary MB: Sony 32x Burner
IDE1 ATA133: Maxtor 80 GB w/ 8 MB buffer
IDE2 ATA133: Maxtor 120 GB w/ 8 MB buffer
The above works fine as is, but I just received my brand spankin new 200 GB HDD from Dell, so I wanted to put that in on their controller card, so it would be:
IDE1 ATA100: WD 2000JBRTL
Problem is, it gets as far as "booting from operating system", and then it stops. Running this on a W2k system with an Asus P4B533-V, and speech reporter goes all the way, but I never make it to the black and white boot screen. Putting in a floppy disk w/ Caldera Dr-Dos gets as far as "Starting Caldera DR-DOS...". Now I don't believe this is a problem with the drive or power since I reluctantly put it as Slave on IDE1 ATA133 and it worked fine. The ATA100 card is also detected just fine in W2k and the WD 2000JBRTL shows up when I'm booting up. Is there something against having multiple IDE controller cards? I tried swapping the positions of the cards to make the ATA133 detect first, no difference. If I set the HDD as a Slave and keep the ATA100 card plugged in, everything runs fine. Its only when I keep the WD 2000JBRTL on the ATA100 card that causes problem. I've checked my Jumper settings as best I can, nothing good.
Miscellaneous computer info:
P4-2.4B @ 2.789
1 gig Corsair PC2700
Total of 520 GB I hope...

Seems youll just have to move stuff around so that the 200g is on the ata133 card...or buy a 133card at anandtech forum for like $25 shipped, lol
I suppose thats why all the new drives from 160g and up come with ata133 controller cards.

I'm pretty sure the card can handle it... why? Because its the PCI controller card that came with the Hard Drive. I hope WD is smart enough to give me a controller card that can handle its own hard drive... anyways, the BIOS is the newest one on WD's website. I prefer to keep the Maxtors on the ATA133 card cuz they're both ATA133, and the WD on the ATA100 cuz well, its ATA100 :P
I followed all their instructions on their stupid poster for the first time, and it doesn't work! Gonna do some more checking on WD's faqs... hopefully they're not complete idiots. :P

Actually, I have W2k SP3, and I've already partitioned it as the max size and everything when its as a Slave. When I put it on the ATA100 Controller Card, it flat out never makes it into Windows. To my knowledge, it stops after the bios check but just prior to any possible operating system start. Boot disks get as far as initial messages and then halts. I'm thinking its some sort of physical configuration thing that I just can't figure out... I ran into a similar problem with my ATA 133 card and Maxtor HDDs, but it was fixed once I actually read the manual to find the jumper settings. The WD HDD isn't so easy though... :|

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.Important Although support for 48-bit LBA is included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and later, it is still necessary to create the registry change that is described in the "Resolution" section of this article.

Fresh update:
Did the 48-bit thing. Still get a blank screen after it says "Computer now booting from Operating System". Never reach the black and white Windows 2k screen. I decided to remove the ATA133 card to see what happens if only the 200 GB HDD was on a card. That works. So it seems that there are only problems when I have more than 4 IDE channels in use? I'm still just guessing, though I figure if you can't have more than 4 IDE channels, it'd be somewhere on google... :P
It seems all the components will work individually or in certain combinations, just not the combination I want...
