Could..
Could a bad bios battery stop the computer getting past the manufacturers boot logo?
Seems my computer won't boot up past the boot logo and i checked all the wires, but someone suggested it could be the battery has gone dead

yep...I had the exact same thing happen last week. Dell Dimension (out of a dumpster)...hung near the end of the bios routine everytime....all it needed was a battery and it was fine.

I had to tell about 100 computer owners out of 1000 not to turn off their power bar/surge protector when finished using their computer as it makes the computer run off that battery.
I tell them if they are going on vacation and don't want to have anything plugged in in their absence to unplug the PC.
Cheers!

There's no difference. It's just easier for a lot of people to turn of the bar rather than crawling under the desk to find the outlet.

I used 2 terms for the same thing. Sorry about that if I left some confusion.
Do not turn off/unplug power to your PC unless leaving your PC for an extended period of time such as a vacation.
Another time you might "want" to unplug, literally, is during a lightning storm.
The cmos battery is for backup power only if your house/office power is off for short durations of time. Local power outages, moving PC to another location, etc.
When your PC is plugged in to the power bar/surge protector and the power bar/surge protector is left on the cmos battery is not used.
Thus, you won't have to replace the battery prematurely.
Cheers!

Looks like it was the network card, fixed the problem, but spent $4 on a battery that didn't need to be replaced
