Western Dig 80gb 8mb hard drive noise

Are these drives all noisy? I bought a new case with a side window and put a 120mm intake fan in the window. At the same time, I bought a second WD and several 80mm. I expected my comp to be a little louder, but damn what a high pitch whine. It seemed to be coming from my cpu fan. I then bought a reducer and changed out the 60mm cpu fan for aa 80mm led fan. Still the whine. I then unplugged every fan except the cpu fan (which I know is quiet). That is when I discovered the noise was from my HD's

Is there any way to quiet these? I have confirmed that it is the hard drives by putting my comp in standby mode. which spins them down.

Incog

You may have a bad drive. I haven't heard of any noise-related complaints coming from WD owners, so you may want to investigate some more.

Ive had a WD 80gb 8mbcache for a year now and Ive had the same problem since the beginning.

The hardrive noise is by far the loudest component in my computer. It drowns out my PSU and CPU fan.

Im gonna get a seagate hardrive soon...they are supposed to be really quiet.

Wow, that is unexpected. I would have thought that it'd be a abd drive as well. WD drives are usually quiet, or at least all the ones I've had have been. The largest drives I have are 60 GBs though.

Hmm thats sort of a bummer to find out... I was considering buying the 80Gig from newegg too, however my system runs fairly quiet now so a "whining" hard drive would be a real bummer. Can anyone else confirm this?

I just bought this hard drive 3 weeks ago with my new computer. Nothing seems to be wrong with it. I don't hear any noise that other people are mentioning about.

I have a couple WD's myself none of which were very loud when new, these drives have since been used and used DOD wiped and all... over and over...they still work but have seen better days-
one got really loud before it failed one day-but I put it on another computer and it worked fine after whiping-it was a still loud though-the seagates i have a much quiter probably because of the rubber shell around them-also i have found that some times noise can be chassis related (For example if you are mounting the drive on the chassis directly and not using a drive tray or using two screws)
I like drive trays alot the help keep the drive a bit cooler (fans) and do quite down the vibration abit but but your gonna hear another fan(s) ....

I've got a 80 gb WD with 8mb cache and I can't hear it at all. It's easily the quietest drive I've ever owned (and the fastest too). I don't know why yours would be so loud. Incidentally, the loudest (and slowest) drive I've ever owned was 20 gb 5400 rpm Seagate Barracuda.
