Upgrading Network

I have 5 computers and one laptop with a wireless nic in it.
I want to get internet access to all of them.

Currently connected:
only 4 computers wired to a Netgear RT314 router.
-Setup: cable modem - routers internet port - 4 computers

Equpement I have: Netgear RT314 router, Linksys wireless broadband router, model NO. BEFW11S4, wired NICs for all 5 computers, wireless card for laptop.

Connections wanted: Wireless connection to the laptop, wired connection to the 5 other computers, one computer used as an ftp server.

How would I go abouts connecting all this stuff together?

My first idea:
cable modem
........|
.......\/
Netgear router
port 1;________ port 2;_________ port 3;__________ port 4
...|..............................|............... ..............|..........................|
..\/.............................\/............................\/.........................\/
computer 1 ;......computer2;.............computer 3;.....Lynksys port 4

Then just use the remaining three ports on the netgear router and wireless capibalities to connect the remaining 2 computers and laptop wirelessly.

a. Will this work?
b. How do I configure the routers to work like this?

you are showing two Netgear routers in your diagram but putting the Linksys wireless unit on port 4 should work if you change the Linksys to an infrastructure state (in other terms, you need to disable it's NAT and DHCP ability) to get the most use of your systems.

Have cable modem --> netgear router
Plug 3 computers into the netgear router, including the one you want to be the FTP server.

Plug the BEFW11S4 into port 4. In the router settings, goto advanced -> dynamic router --> switch to to "router" mode from "gateway". I think you also need to disable DHCP as DVNT said.

Now setup your other computers into that router, including the wireless. I have that linksys router and the wireless is a breeze to setup. Just make sure you enable some WEP encryption and you may want to turn off SSID broadcast for security reasons.

ok I fixed the digram and switched from gateway to router mode. Disabled the DHCP server.
Now where would I find its NAT options?

VHockey86 probably knows for sure, but I would guess turning off "Gateway" mode would take care of the NAT.

Do you have the linksys router and the netgear router setup as different local IPs?

I know linksys routers default to 192.168.1.1
Whats the netgear set at?

Can the routers hooked up to the linksys router ping each other? can they ping the router? Can they ping the netgear router? Computers hooked up to the netgear router? This should help you see at what level the problem is.

Can all the computers (both in the netgear and in the linksys router) access the settings for the linksys router?

edit-----

ok cool, have fun =)

just a side note the ip addresses on the computers connected to the linksys router now have ips 192.168.0.x like the ones connected to the netgear.

Might have a bit of a problem still with the wireless

Well since the netgear router is acting as your gateway thats to be expected =)

Now all Id recommend working on is configuring your wireless security options. I cant seem to find the big thread on it here at techimo tho... oh well

Basically just make up a weird name for your SSID (input it into the laptop), then disable SSID broadcast. Also create a 128bit WEP key (very easy to do with the linksys settings), and then input that into the laptop as well under wireless properties
