problem reinstalling xp off recovery disk

I have a new Dell computer. I decided to reinstall the OS shortly after i got it. I put in recovery disk and went through the prompts. I chose same partiton that other OS was on. Said it couldnt run two OS at the same timeand might cause conflicts. I chose to delete old OS of course and reinstalled. Now it runs very badly. when it boots up it has two choices to choose from: run computer with winxp home or run computer with winxp home. I think it has TWO operating systems on it. How do i do a complete format and reinstall?

by the way (recovery disks are a waste)

Its common to have 2 o\s listed after doing a reinstall. If you want you can right click My computer, pick properties, advanced, startup and recovery and uncheck display operating systems for __seconds.

Did you use NTFS or Fat32?
