Gaming Mandrake won't reboot!

I have windows Xp on my laptop. I created new partitions and installed also Linux Mandrake and everything went fine but i only have one problem. I'm not able to reboot or even shutdown from linux (it gives a blank black screen and the cpu starts on working cuz the fans start) and when linux start it always tells me that i have problems that need to be fixed but maybe i will loose some data if i did fix them and after that i can't press anything and i had to turn off the pc manually. What's the problem and how can i fix it? Thanks.

you need to give an *exact* match of your error messages here, and be as descriptive as possible with your problem.

i would suggest going into the console, or hitting control+f3 (f1-f7 all should work), login as root, and type "init 6" without the quotes. this is the way in which you can sortof manually reboot your pc. also, instead of clicking shutdown, or whatever, i would suggest going into the command line just as before except typing "halt" without the quotes. this will force your pc to shut down.

if all else fails, reinstall mandrake. also, be sure to do md5 file integrity checks on your installation disks of mandrake, they may possibly be currupt. if so, download/burn them again and reinstall mandrake.

any further problems report back i'll see what i can do.

I agree that something sounds messed up with your installation.

From a terminal, try issuing this command.
Once you type su and enter your root password, type
shutdown -h now
or alternatively
reboot

If neither of these work you should probably reinstall. Make sure to use ext3 or reiserFS when you do reinstall as your filesystem.

When you are shutting down, where are you doing if from, the Login manager?

has the partitioun maybe not been properly unmounted and now it's asking you whether you want to try to fix the errors?

Correct Laf. This is because he hard boots. Doesn't go through the shutdown procedure correctly.

lost-and-found yes that's the problem. Ok i will try to describe the problem in a better way. Ok let's say i have just installed mandrake and before i log in for the first time if i press on reboot or halt it reboots normally but when i log in and try to reboot or shut down computer it wont and the fan will start working so i will have to shut down manually and the next time i try to start mandrake it will tell me that the pc was not shotdown properly and it will start on doing some sort of a scan and then it tells me that it wasnt able to check the file system and it asks me if i want to clean the errors even if that will maybe make me loose data and at this point the keyboard will not respond to anything.(also there is a message given about something not mounted..) Note that i installed from the same cd on another computer and had no problems, everything worked fine. And by the way the file type i choosed for the partition where i installed is EXT2, should it be EXT3? Thanks.

Ext3 is a little more forgiving of those hard shutdowns and reboots.

It's ok it worked, i just have to write reboot manually to reboot and halt to shut down. Thanks guys. Now i have a second question, linux didn't accept my modem, it said it's not supported. Can anyone give me the detailed procedure of how i can install its driver and where i can find it. The modem is an ESS Superlink-M Data Fax Voice Modem. Thanks.

An actual chip number would be more helpful. Have a look here:
http://linmodems.org/
Winmodem support on Linux isn't great, but its worked for some people.
