CPU Overclock Question

I have a 2500+ and 2 sets of ram - geil 512 ddr400 and the other is a dual channel set (256x2 ddr433) also by geil.

when i push the fsb to 200 with the single chip - my system is unstable in windows. so i have to lower it down to 197 with the memory running at the same speed.

however, when i use the dual channel ddr433 memory - i can run the pc at 200fsb with the memory running at the same speed.

i am using an asus a7n8x dlx rev2 board with bios 1.04.

what is going on? is it the memory that it the problem?

Hmm...

The Barton 2500 is 333Mhz
One stick is 400Mhz
One stick is 433Mhz.

You have problems from the start. Now everything should work, but you should try and have everything running at the same FSB.

What's your system cooling like?

Send a message via ICQ to JohnE.
To get my A7N8X Deluxe 2.0/Athlon XP 2200+ (133Mhz) to post at 166Mhz FSB I had to change the RAM timings from Aggressive to Optimal. I'm running 2x256MB OCZ PC3200 in Dual Channel mode.

Once it posted (and WinXP loaded) I was able to reboot and change back to Aggressive and it's been running fine at 167FSB/x11.5/1.92Ghz ever since. Dunno if this will work for you but may be worth a shot.

oh i didnt make it clear in the beginning...

i only use one of the two memory sets.

when i use the 512 ddr400 - i can only get up to 197fsb = 2.17ghz

when i use the other ram set - the 2x256 ddr433 - i can get 200fsb = 2.2ghz.

both are set to 11 multiplier.

well - i will be returning the motherboard and the memory - i switched over to a biostar n7cd pro. sadly enough, the asus did not work out for me. i am sticking with the golden dragons.

with the asus and either chipset .... i wasnt able to be stable at 200fsb. with the regular geil 512 ram - i got as high as 197 before instability issues crept in. with the golden dragon ram... i could get it stable at 200fsb but not any higher.

HOWEVER, with the $57 biostar motherboard.. i am stable with the regular geil 512 at 200fsb... which is 3200+ @2.2ghz.

BUT, with the golden dragon ram - i am stable all the way to 209fsb (havent really had the guts to push for 210+) which gives me a 2.31ghz processor and a PR of 3331 (3300+)! just to give u an idea of this - the 2.31 which the biostar puts out gets almost 7000 in pcmark2002 cpu test, whereas the asus puts out a 6500 with the 2.21ghz (max). ALMOST a 10% difference!

VERY IMPRESSED with this cheap (but great performing) motherboard.

the asus was a nice motherboard - but i felt like it was just too clunky for me. i didnt need all the extra features - and the soundstorm was a disappointment... not even close to my audigy2. the thing i miss though is the dual lan... but thats ok - ill take overall performance over features ANY DAY.

one thing i noticed though.... the ASUS is a very EFFICIENT motherboard. i ran pcmark2002 on both mobos with both sets of rams and the ASUS outperformed the biostar at the SAME settings... with regards to the memory score. also, in sysmark - the asus nudged out the biostar in memory bandwidth - at SAME SETTINGS. this leads me to believe that the ASUS is a real efficient machine.

HOWEVER, the ASUS cannot even begin to compare to the BIOSTAR when the biostar is pushed. OMG.... the bandwidth in sysmark pushes through 3000mb/s - closing in on theoretical limit. and i can score over 6300 in pcmark2002 memory test. about 5-8% better than the asus overall.

and with my 9700pro on the biostar board - i was able to plow through 3dmark2001 with a score about 17500. it is insane.

too bad hl2 is delayed.
