Modem Help Needed !!
Got in another load of Dell's
Same old deal, no modem so I install my CNet/Connextant PCI modem.
Everything goes well, the modem tests properly in control panel however in "New Connection Wizard" the modem box is greyed out. Also an attempt to set up MSN says "No Modem Found"
6 attempts with different modems fail ,, 3 internal, 3 external. The externals were 1 USB and 2 Serial Modems.
Any clues ?
BTW, I've never had issues setting up other new Dell's with cheapo modems.
Thanks
Doc

Dang... submitted too quickly....
And free up the IRQ3 for the modem, disable PnP for that IRQ, etc.

may be this is what it is
try reinstalling the Modem again, and also ask Tech Support at MSN to send u another CD, as the same thing happened to me, and now i have a new CD and it worked....
also if u wanna pay less for Internet choose : http://www.access4less.net/IndexGo.htm
it is only $8 for signup and activation and monthly rate of $4.95. I think this is the cheapest one out there, ad works for me, even though the city i am in does not have V.92 support, basic V.90 works at 53.2 kbps - and the main thing i like is no CD to install, all u need todo to get a connection is just setup a manual connection. all u need to connect is just a number to dial and the username and password. I hate all the crappy software bundled up with the dialers for most ISP's. and u can also use the same account accross all platforms, i even use it under my Linux OS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
just a suggestion.

Doc | Sure, the BIOS setup could default differently within a production run.... that is why people flash new BIOSes, because of discovered issues.

Not sure it it relates, but I had a similar experience with a new Dell last ~December?. I could not get it to work with a PCI modem correctly. I tried reformating and doing a new install with WinXP /sp1 and had the same results.
The solution we went with was simply getting an external modem. (Dell tech support never had a good answer either).

When you connected the external serial modems, you need to set the com ports in the bios to "COM1 IRQ4" and "COM2 IRQ3". Most serial external modems need to use com1 or com2 with the IRQ's specified above. If the serial ports are set to "automatic" in the bios then windows will assign the com ports to anything that might need a com port automatically with maybe COM4 and IRQ10. An external serial modem will never work with those parameters. Also if you use an older non PNP internal modem that uses jumpers to strap the COM port and IRQ, you need to disable the com port in the bios first before the modem will work. That is if you want the internal modem to work on COM1 IRQ4 you need to disable COM1 in the bios.

Youve used that same exact brand modem in the other Dells? Just by chance have you tested one of those same exact 3 modems in another comp?

Well, the thing is guys..he is saying that the modem installs just fine and checks out fine with the modem diagnostics...it is just that he cant make a connection with the wizard.
hmm, is there a way to make a connection and not use the wizard?
